Cross Kentucky Trails Project Maps Trails of the Commonwealth Via High-Tech System

Cross Kentucky Trails Project Maps Trails of the Commonwealth Via High-Tech System
FRANKFORT, KY—The Cross Kentucky Trails Project initiative seeks to map the trails of the Commonwealth by incorporating GPS-collected data from individual self-mapping efforts into the Commonwealth’s Award-Winning Geographic Information System in order to identify all of Kentucky’s numerous trails. Additionally, this site provides references to additional Internet Mapping Sites, GPS services and related links regarding the Cross Kentucky Trail Project. Kentucky is an adventure waiting to happen and this project embodies the spirit of those who appreciate the wide range of recreational opportunities here in the Commonwealth. The state is truly the premier frontier for Adventure Tourism in the nation, enhancing the economies of many rural areas as it attracts lovers of the outdoors and adventure seekers from across the US and globe. The Cross Kentucky Trail project is central to the success of adventure travel in Kentucky. The trail system resulting from this initiative will be a figurehead for the ability of adventure travel to positively impact all regions of the state, from rural to urban. The First Lady and the Lt. Governor's Office are spearheading the effort with the primary goal of completing a trail that stretches from the Eastern Coal Fields to the Western Coal Fields of Kentucky. If all goes according to plan, portions of this multi-use trail system will be utilized by many that will be attending the Equestrian Games in 2010. All of our trips combine the most popular destinations in these countries with unusual locations, native guides, and opportunities to connect with local people. Wild Treks to Save the Rhino: Luxury Safaris in Partnership with Wildlife Conservation Projects

LAKE SUCCESS, NY--- Together with Tsavo National Park, Mkomazi Game Reserve forms one of the largest and most important ecosystems on earth. Linked to the legendary conservationists Tony Fitzjohn and George Adamson, African Wildlife Preservation Trust has worked since 1989 on the front lines in the battle to save the critically endangered African black rhino. The black rhino has been re-introduced into Mkomazi from South Africa after heavy poaching, overgrazing, deliberate burning, and illegal hunting had wiped out its black rhino populations. The seven black rhino live in the sanctuary which also has a waterhole and wallow for the rhinos. There is also an underground observation point. Baobab Expeditions gives visitors an up close and personal look at the Save the Rhino foundation while donating a fixed fee per person to the organization and travelers automatically become a member of the foundation when they visit. Travel in your own personal 4x4, feast on gourmet African fare, and stay in luxury wilderness lodges and camps along the way. Other highlights of this safari include visits to Nairobi, Massai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park, and an optional extension to Zanzibar Island. Time Is Not a Friend

At the end of most days I just feel overwhelmed and like a failure to some extent. Not to be a Negative Nancy or a Debbie Downer, but seriously, my “to do” list grows longer and I just can’t keep up. Each day and I don’t seem to make a dent in it. Some people can flick on the TV, prop up their feet, and just tune their “to do’s” out, but I’m just not that kind of girl. Lately, my career has been bugging me. I seriously have the coolest job in the world, except I continually struggle to support myself financially. Of course it’s not entirely my jobs fault. I am one of those irresponsible suckers who racked up some debt (on a four month trip to Europe when I was going through my “throw caution completely to the wind and ignore your financial situation” phase) and now I’m paying for it. The trouble is, I came home from my four month trip to Europe, fell in love with a wonderful man, and now we’re getting married and moving towards the house and kids. Oops. I didn’t quite plan on that. When I decided to throw caution to the wind, I thought I would always be single, carefree, and able to pay off my debt…..some other time. But, as a previous boss of mine always said, “it is what it is.” It’s time for me to accept things as they are and come up with a financial solution. I need more contract work, but how will I find the time?

Aside from the money troubles, there are some emotional demons lurking in the shadows as well. I literally stumbled into my PR career (and I’m told I have a lot to offer the field of PR), but at a definite cost to something else: I’ve almost completely ignored my career as a writer (creative writer that is). Honestly, where does the time go? Every day, I have the best of intentions to sit down and do some writing. And every day, my intentions get put in a box and up on the closet shelf. I honestly don’t know what happened to all of those travel articles that were lined up in the queue. Or the pitches that I was going to send to all of those editors. I have been told before that I am a pretty good writer. But somewhere along the way, I just stopped believing that I could make this happen. My fiancé thinks I’m too negative. But how does a genuine, good old fashioned worry wart stop being a Negative Nancy and just get to writing? It’s amazing how Time just becomes the enemy as you get older. I’ve heard people use the expression, “Time is the enemy”, but I always thought they were referring to age. I’ve since learned that this is not true. I think time is the enemy because we all just add more to our plates every day….or maybe that’s just me. Either way, I just don’t have time for all of the things that I want to do (like chase my writing career) and that just frustrates the hell out of me.
Although I’m excited about my life with my future husband--- the kids, the house----I dread what it will do to my relationship with Time. Between changing diapers, making meals, and earning a few dollars, Time and I will really have to duke it out then. Oh, but wait, I’ll have to check my schedule first before the fistfight….I’m not sure I’ll be able to squeeze it in because I’m too busy.

March of the Penguins: Close Encounters With the Emporers

March of the Penguins: Close Encounters with the Emperors
Denver, Colo.—Nowadays, it’s rare to find something new in nature, but a newly found rookery of thousands of Emperor Penguins has been discovered, and Baobab Expeditions offers select travelers the chance to walk among these remarkable creatures. On this trip, guests travel to the rookery at Snow Hill, just a short cruising distance of the Antarctic Peninsula, to explore this region and the penguins that inhabit here. Passengers board an icebreaking vessel that is specifically designed to allow small groups of travelers to walk among the penguins in their natural habitat. An onboard ornithologist teaches passengers about the biology, habitat, and behavior of the Emperor Penguins as the ship crosses the frozen tundra. Helicopters are used to give visitors a closer look (but not close enough to interfere). Travelers visit during the rearing season, so they will be treated to the sights of young chicks waddling around, while mother and father fawn over their new young. Dates: October 10-23, Oct 22-Nov 4, Nov 3-16, 2009. Media Contact: Stephanie Moreland, Stephanie@atmstravelnews.com , 832-755-7661 . www.baobabexpeditions.com . Photos Available. Saving the Gorilla, One Tourist At a Time

Saving the Gorilla, One Tourist At a Time
Kampala, Uganda—It’s astounding to think that although there are six billion human beings living on our crowded planet, there are only some seven hundred mountain gorillas left on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. Volcanoes Safaris, a company that specializes in mountain gorilla safaris, was at the forefront of opening tourism around the Ugandan gorilla parks a decade ago and in 2000 became the first international up-market safari company to take clients to see gorillas in post-conflict Rwanda, a vital step in relaunching international tourism in this area. Volcanoes Safaris is the only company that has created and built their own eco-lodges that are near gorilla parks, with a fourth lodge on the way that is near a threatened community of chimpanzees. Through their safari programs, eco-lodges, and conservation partnerships, they have built an organization that promotes tourism but also respects the fragility of the environment and the culture of the local communities. Through their partnerships, like the Volcanoes BLCF project, their new Kyambura Gorge Ecotourism Partnership project, and their eco lodges, they support gorilla, wildlife, and primate conservation and ensure that local people get a stake in tourism in the areas in which Volcanoes Safaris works. Tourists have a direct impact on both the wildlife and the communities in the area: Volcanoes Safaris helps fund a multitude of conservation and community projects such as primate conservation, schools, roads, clinics, and community centers, which in turn encourages local communities to understand the value of the primates continued survival. Overcoming Fear: Men’s Whitewater Rafting Trip Encourages Personal Growth

Angels Camp, California – Worried about your drinking or your mortgage? Not getting along with your wife? How are you going to come up with your daughter’s college tuition? Or maybe you’re an old-fashioned kind of guy, with an old-fashioned problem: why doesn’t my girlfriend understand me? Why do we have so many fights? How do other guys handle these problems?

Don Hatch River Expeditions announced today a special men-only whitewater rafting expedition through Dinosaur National Monument on August 20, 2009. The four-day rafting, hiking and camping trip, open to males over the age of 18, encourages participants to address their fears while in a wilderness setting. Put down the remote, get away, simplify, rejuvenate, dream new dreams, and believe in yourself again. No previous camping, rafting or outdoors experience is necessary in this unstructured men’s retreat. The only ground rules? The expedition is alcohol and tobacco free.

Rough it within reason in the stress-free environment of an organized rafting trip. Hatch knows a thing or two about playing host – the company has been guiding people downstream for 80 years. Their Green River rafting trip through Dinosaur National Monument offers a Colorado rafting journey set in an abbreviated version of the Grand Canyon with red rock cliffs and amazing open-air archives of fossils and geological wonders. Complementing the days spent in a raft are endless exploratory side hikes in river canyons, quiet beach camps and moderate whitewater.

Joining the trip will be veteran men’s group leader Carl Dick. Dick has a long, successful history as a public speaker, contract negotiator and sales manager. In his early career, he successfully negotiated contracts and sales for Johnson and Johnson and Baxter International. His own company topped Inc.’s Top 50 list in the early 1990s. His leadership role has taken him from his Colorado home into the world of Recovery in hospitals, detoxification centers and prisons. Most recently, he has helped form men’s groups based on Recovery from drugs and alcohol.

George Wendt, Founder and President of Hatch’s parent company - O.A.R.S., stated from his Northern California headquarters, “Carl is a long-time O.A.R.S. adventurer and whitewater rafting enthusiast. While traveling with Carl recently, I noticed his innate ability to connect with other travelers on a very deep level. I watched time and again as people experienced an unexplained confidence in him. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but he has a unique ability to draw people out and allow them to safely deal with issues and challenges they haven’t entirely processed. I thought – here is someone who would be ideal to create a trip around. I look forward to losing myself deep in a river canyon… and refocusing on what truly matters. Getting away from daily distractions always helps me to re-prioritize and gain clarity.”

From his home in Colorado, Mr. Dick commented, “I help people reflect on their choices and take responsibility for their current situations. Instead of commiserating endlessly about what is not working, I focus on solutions. George and I envision this journey as an opportunity for men to speak freely about their deepest feelings in a nonjudgmental setting. Participants may choose to discuss their fears or they may simply listen. There is no intended structure or expectations. Who knows where our unencumbered conversations may lead?”

###

The HATCH family name has been synonymous with river running since 1929. With blessings from the National Park Service and the Hatch family, in 2007 Don Hatch River Expeditions became a part of the O.A.R.S. Family of Companies. It has been a seamless transition and one that offers generations of Hatch adventurers more opportunities on dozens of rivers throughout the West. Since 1969 the O.A.R.S.Family of Companies have set the standard in first-class rafting, sea kayaking, hiking and multi-sport adventures, with destinations and unparalleled experiences on over 35 rivers and coastlines of the world. O.A.R.S. caters to active travelers of all ages and abilities with more than 75 unique itineraries worldwide, including one-day and weekend escapes. For more information on the O.A.R.S. “Paddles and Pints”: Rogue Wilderness Adventures Offers Trips that Combine Rafting and Beer Tasting With an Oregon Microbrewery

Grants Pass, Ore.—Two great Oregon traditions—whitewater rafting and micro brewed beer—will come together this Labor Day weekend as Rogue Wilderness Adventures launches their first “Paddles and Pints” trip. This veteran rafting company who has been taking guests down the Rogue River for over 38 years is partnering with Oregon brew master Mark Vickery for days of thrilling whitewater and sipping on frosty, delicious locally crafted beers.

With over 20 years of brewing experience and an armful of awards for beers like Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter, Mark Vickery has a resume that reflects his professional expertise in the beer world. For the last five years Mark has been the head brewer at Golden Valley Brewery in McMinnville, Oregon. Mark honed his beer making skills in the trenches at the Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon, where he and his fellow brewers created some of the most iconic beers the world has seen. Marks passion is to create beers that use fresh hops and other local ingredients that are available near the brewery.

This trip will be a 4 day, 3 night rafting excursion down the wild and scenic Rogue River Canyon. During the day, the staff of Rogue Wilderness Adventures will take paddlers down one of the most beautiful whitewater rivers in the country. Evenings will be spent camping on sandy beaches as guides serve mouthwatering riverside fare that perfectly complements beer tasting: dishes like steak, grilled shrimp, and fajitas. The beer tastings are as follows:

First Night: Northwest pale ales and Indian pale ales,

Second Night: Pilsners and Lagers, German, Czech, Dutch, Mexican and American

Adventure Canada’s 2009 Itineraries Celebrate The Creation of Nunavut and Historic Arctic Milestones

Mississauga, ON—Adventure Canada is announcing their 2009 Canadian Arctic itineraries which take visitors on five voyages exploring six unique and vibrant regions; Greenland, Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, Newfoundland and Labrador. 2009 marks a particularly significant year for travel with Adventure Canada as the commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the creation of Nunavut as well as the 100th Anniversary of Sir Robert Peary's & Captain Bob Bartlett's famed 1909 North Pole Expedition.

The Heart of the Arctic expedition is a special sailing to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Nunavut. Woven into the fabric of the programming for this expedition will be an up-close examination of the newest Canadian Territory and its objectives and achievements thus far. A key element will be the increased visibility of Inuit stewardship of the land and issues surrounding global warming, hunting, and wildlife conservation. Adventure Canada will have a number of Inuit resource staff who have experienced first-hand this transition period and will share their personal insights with travelers.

In 2009 Adventure Canada will celebrate the life of Newfoundland’s own Captain Bob Bartlett, the world-renowned Arctic explorer and historical icon. It was Captain Bartlett that commanded Sir Robert Peary’s famed 1909 North Pole expedition. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 1909 expedition, Adventure Canada is excited to announce two sailings through the Northwest Passage - a first for the company. The focus on the pole and the issues of the opening of the Northwest Passage are never far from the headlines these days and the two Northwest Passage itineraries provide a firsthand look at the changes and possible commerce in the north as well as the impact this might have this fragile ecosystem.

Along the coast of Labrador next year, Adventure Canada is thrilled to present a new concept in expeditionary cruising. Their Atlantic Arts Float will, in addition to their usual resource staff, will have additional writers, photographers, artists, and musicians. Inspired by the landscape, and through a collection of workshops, collaborative projects, concerts, and exhibitions, Adventure Canada will help promote the creative spirit for travelers.

While each of their itineraries offers a general focus – wildlife, photography, art, historical exploration or Inuit culture - past and present, their programming remains multidisciplinary, with a team of expert resource staff on each sailing. Adventure Canada celebrated the founding of Nunavut in 1999 and they are delighted to offer our clients a 10th anniversary program in 2009.

Walk to Healing and Wholeness: Hiking Trips along Oregon’s Historic Rogue River Offer Solitude and Well-Being

Grants Pass, Ore.—When life gets emotionally overwhelming, tragedy strikes, or mental exhaustion consumes, sometimes the best solution is to make time for some peace and quiet in the great outdoors. The Rogue River National Recreation Trail from Grave Creek to Foster Bar is in the heart of the National Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon, and is almost untouched by human hand. Departing from Grants Pass, Oregon, Rogue Wilderness Adventures takes hikers on 10-14 mile daily hikes while the staff will carries guest bags, supplies, and a favorite case of wine for relaxing under the Oregon stars after a full day of activity. Hikers will be amazed at the breathtaking scenery that awaits them as they wind above the river of this 110-year old trail. Each night, participants arrive at a historic lodge and relax in front of the fire as the lodge staff prepares a wonderful meal, leaving time for reflection and rejuvenation. Accommodation is in cabins that sleep two people each with private bathrooms, and serene nights spent in the wilderness will be conducive to deep and all-encompassing relaxation.

Remembering Gorillas in the Mist: Baobab Expeditions in Partnership with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

Denver, CO— This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Academy Award nominated movie, Gorillas in the Mist, starring Sigourney Weaver as real-life naturalist Dian Fossey and her work in the Congo with Mountain Gorillas. Although Dian Fossey died in 1985, her legacy continues on today in many forms. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) is dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitat in Africa. Baobab Expeditions, a company that takes modern day explorers on expeditions around the world, was hand-picked by the DFGFI for partnership as their travel provider due to Baobab’s unique, exploratory approach to expeditions through Africa and its conviction to support both wildlife conservation and community organizations.

As a result of this partnership, Baobab Expeditions has created conservation travel itineraries in partnership with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund that are specifically designed to give guests a greater insight into how this charity operates while providing adventurers with an unforgettable vacation experience. These expeditions give travelers the opportunity to view gorillas in the wild and visit Fossey’s historical stomping grounds. Since Dian Fossey’s death, DFGFI has continued and expanded her pioneering work with endangered gorillas. In addition, DFGFI now operates programs for education, health, and economic development in local African communities.

Some of the activities of the DFGFI include:
Daily monitoring, protection and study of the mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans, from the world-renowned Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey. The center also operates educational programs, shares its scientific database with scientists and conservationists throughout the world, and provides training in tracking, anti-poaching, research, and other techniques.
Working with a series of community-based preserves and national parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to help protect a unique eco-region that is home to the endangered Grauer’s gorilla and many other rare species.
Helping to bring a healthier environment to local communities through health education, medical treatments, clean water, and disease prevention programs.
Supporting special needs of local communities decimated by war, including orphanages, widows’ organizations, women’s business groups, and small-scale economic development.
Providing educational opportunities, programs, and resources for local populations.

A portion of every Baobab trip booking goes towards this worthwhile organization. Trips are from 4-12 days and departure dates are year-round. With rafting and kayaking journeys ranging from 1 to 19 days, from North America to exotic locations such as Fiji and the Galapagos Islands, it is no surprise that National Geographic Adventure Magazine honored O.A.R.S. for a second year in a row as “The Best River & Sea Outfitter on Earth.” The editors surveyed 248 adventure travel companies representing paddling outfitters, trekking guides, safari specialists and companies spanning the globe that offer a collection of adventure travel experiences. According to Adventure, the feature represents “a comprehensive ranking of the world’s best outfitters - surveyed, sorted and scored.” In analyzing the leading adventure travel specialists, Adventure considered factors such as environmental awareness, sustainability, reliable service, local knowledge, safety practices, spirit of adventure, client satisfaction and other variables in ranking the travel providers. National Geographic Adventure also recognized O.A.R.S.’ “Grand Staircase: Wind & Water on the Colorado Plateau” as one of their "25 Best New Trips in the World” for 2009.

“We are honored to receive such recognition. We would have never guessed in 1969 that our humble operations would evolve into what is now the largest and most geographically diverse river company in the West,” commented George Wendt, Founder and President of O.A.R.S. The California-based tour operator has led travelers to some of the most beautiful places on earth, never losing sight of one of their foremost goals: to make the joys of the wilderness accessible to everyone – no matter how experienced. The adventure travel outfitter offers timeless trips to such places as the Grand Canyon and Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon River, in addition to continually seeking out new journeys.

O.A.R.S. was the first exclusively oar-powered rafting outfitter permitted to run the Colorado through the Grand Canyon in 1969. For 40 years they have provided superior personal service, hired the best guides and maintained the highest quality equipment. Because of their unparalleled reputation, Forbes Traveler recognized O.A.R.S.’ Upper Navua River trip in Fiji as one of the "World's 10 Best Rafting Trips,” and in August 2008, Concierge.com listed the O.A.R.S.’ Grand Canyon trip on their "Bucket List of Ultimate Adventures." In 2008 SmarterTravel.com rated the company’s Rogue River whitewater rafting trip as their “Best Adventure Bargain" and Sunset Magazine named O.A.R.S.’ Cataract Canyon trip as one of their top "10 Earth-Friendly Spring Flings."

As testament to O.A.R.S. Adventure Consultants and office staff, who have a combined experience of more than 100 years in the adventure travel industry and more than 900 river trips among them, Condé Nast Traveler recognized Reservations Manager, Mindy Gleason, as one of its “Top Travel Specialists” for the second year in a row in 2008.

Rogue Wilderness Adventures Announces 2009 World-Renowned Hiking and Wilderness Lodge Trips

MERLIN, Oregon—Rogue Wilderness Adventures, a pioneer in hiking and rafting adventure trips along Oregon’s Rogue River that was highlighted as Outside Go’s premier outfitter for what was named one of the “top 12 treks on the globe” in 2008 is announcing its hiking trips for the 2009 season. The Rogue River National Recreation Trail from Grave Creek to Foster Bar is in the heart of the National Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon. This is a 44-mile trail that was originally built by miners, and there are 5 historic lodges along the trail that were built in the early 1900s and can only be accessed by foot or raft. Rogue Wilderness Adventures takes visitors on multiple-day treks to this area, now recognized as one of the best treks in the world.

These hikes are adventures in solitude—they give the visitor a new perspective as they witness the beauty of the river corridor and enjoy the benefits of the preservation of this area. Adventurers get the chance to learn about the history of this part of the country while enjoying the quiet scenery and opportunities to spot wildlife like bears, deer, and eagles. Hikers stay in the comfort of the cozy historic lodges after a long day on the trails and feast on hearty home-cooked meals, fresh bread, and views of the lush wilderness. This wild & scenic area is virtually absent of the effects of human development, and is one of the great wilderness experiences in the United States. The staff at Rogue Wilderness Adventures takes care of all details including transferring luggage from site to site by raft so that adventurers can make the most of their hiking experience, and at less than $1300, these trips offer budget-minded travelers a great value for their money.

During the months of May, June, September and October Rogue Wilderness Adventures offers a variety of these treks. All of the trips begin at Grave Creek trail head about 30 miles west of the town of Grants Pass. The trail from Grave Creek to Foster Bar is 44 miles long and is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service. The elevation at the trail head is 689 feet and at Foster Bar the elevation is 474. Itineraries range from 4 to 7 days.
